Summertime is one of my favorite seasons. After the Winter, it is nice to hear the laughter of children playing outside in their bare feet, the smell of fresh cut grass, the fragrance of flowers, and the welcoming of friends for backyard BBQ’s.
Along with the fun parts of summer, warmer weather also means that I get out of the house more often and enjoy God’s creation. As a working mom of 2, sometimes it can be hard though to get some quiet time in the middle of all of the Summer happenings.
Come to me all you who are weak and weary and I will give you rest
Matthew 11:28
For me, this season feels free, and my soul finds rest in the mornings as I will sometimes take my young littles to the beach for walks. There have been many mornings that I am up earlier than the beach opens and as we walk out on the pier I enjoy the stillness of the morning, as the sun rises and reflects on the water.
It was the beginning of June, and the weather was finally starting to get nice again. I had just come off of a busy season, and was looking forward to enjoying the summer. I was also in need of some rest for my soul. As a mom though, there didn’t seem to be any rest in sight.
That week though, God graciously gave me an opportunity to do something that I should do more often. Take a walk alone with Him. I ended up getting out of work early, and decided to take some time to grab a coffee and walk by the lake that was on the way to my children’s daycare.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither– whatever they do prospers.
Psalm 1:3
As I began to walk and enjoy the beauty of creation, I felt that He had set this time apart. I began to be aware that He desperately was wanting me to connect with Him just one on one. As I walked, I knew He wanted to speak and so I listened. I listened to His heart, and His words of love.
I sat by the water and gazed at the beautiful scenery and the tall trees that were now fully in bloom. These trees that were planted by the river, and thriving because of the nourishment of the water. This was a reflection of my soul in this moment. I felt like His living water was surely providing rest for my soul right then, right there.
Be free, and fly…
As I continued my walk I turned a bend there was a tree with a message on it. Although the message was written for someone else, I know that He meant it for me too. Be free and fly. The moment was so protected, and I knew that He had prepared this moment just for me. Yes God, freedom to fly mounted on wings like eagles, as I abide in You.
My walks with Him are always a time that is refreshing for me. I am always left with a deeper sense of rest for my soul just because of being with Him.
Summer is coming to an end quickly. August brings the busyness of getting ready for the kids to go back to school, last minute road trips. The end of summer also brings the knowledge that soon Fall will be here, along with the crisp air.
Make time during this season of warmth to get outside, and take a walk with Him. God wanted to meet me, just as He desires to meet with you. May the next few weeks be a spiritually renewing time for your soul as you abide in Him.
